Frequently Ask Questions
Licensing & Exam Requirements
1). What Do I Need to Know About the General Contractor Exams? The exams are open book, but don’t be fooled, they're challenging and require thorough preparation. To pass, you’ll need a minimum score of 70% on each exam. 📖 Business & Finance Exam - 120 scored questions (125 questions in total) - 6.5 hours to complete 📖 Contract Administration Exam - 60 scored questions (65 questions in total) - 4.5 hours to complete 📖 Project Management Exam - 60 scored questions (65 questions in total) - 4.5 hours to complete Each exam tests critical knowledge required for your contractor’s license, from financial management to construction regulations and project execution. Be sure to study strategically, practice with exam-style questions, and make the most of your open-book advantage! Test scores are valid for 4-years from the date you pass your 1st exam.
2). What Does It Take to Qualify for the Certified General Contractor (CGC) License? To become a Certified General Contractor (CGC), you must: 1️⃣ Pass the Three Required Exams: - Business & Finance Exam - Contract Administration Exam - Project Management Exam 2️⃣ Meet the Board’s Qualification Requirements: The Board will review your application based on your “Method of Qualification”. Applicants in the General or Building Contractor categories must demonstrate commercial construction experience involving new buildings in at least four (4) of the following areas: ✅ Foundations or slabs exceeding 20,000 square feet ✅ Masonry walls ✅ Steel erection ✅ Elevated slabs ✅ Column erection ✅ Formwork for structural reinforced concrete. General Contractors must have at least 1-year of experience on a New 4-story or higher project. 3️⃣ Fulfill One of These Experience Paths: To qualify, you must meet one of the following criteria: 🔹 Have at least four years of active experience in the trade, with at least one year as a foreman. OR 🔹 Combine college credits, military experience, skilled trade work, and foreman experience totaling four years. OR 🔹 Hold a four-year college degree in engineering, architecture, or building construction, plus at least one year of construction experience.
3). How Does the 'Upgrade Method' Work for Becoming a Certified General Contractor? If you pass the Certified General Contractor (CGC) exam but only meet the qualifications for a Certified Building Contractor (CBC) or Certified Residential Contractor (CRC), you can still upgrade later! After holding a CBC or CRC license for four years, you're eligible to UPGRADE & exempt from the work history requirement for CGC. This means you don’t need to show experience in 4-story commercial new construction, making the upgrade process much simpler.
4). Can I Skip the General Contractor Exams? Yes! There are four ways to bypass the trade exams while still meeting licensing requirements: ✅ Construction Degree Exemption – If you hold a 4-year construction-related degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher, you are exempt from the Trade exams, but must still pass the Business & Finance Exam. ✅ Out-of-State License Endorsement – If you have held a valid out-of-state contractor license for at least 10 years (active within the last 2 years), you may qualify for exam exemption. ✅ NASCLA Exam Option – Passing the NASCLA Accredited Exam can be used in place of the Florida Trade exams, but you must still pass the Business & Finance Exam to complete licensing requirements. (NASCLA is Harder) ✅ Florida Reciprocity Agreements – Florida has reciprocity agreements with North Carolina, Louisiana, and Mississippi. If you’ve held a valid contractor license in one of these states for at least five years, you may be eligible to skip Florida’s trade exams.
