CERTIFIED SPECIALTY LICENSE TYPES IN FLORIDA
The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) has created certified specialty license types in Florida for the following 22 categories (click to expand):
1). Structural Carpentry Specialty Contractor
A “structural carpentry specialty contractor” is qualified and certified by the board to install any wood products or metal framing in a structure of a building including rough framing, door, window (including metal), and structural trusses. FAC 61G4-14.100 (m).
2). Structural Masonry Specialty Contractor
3). Structural Steel Work Specialty Contractor
4). Structural Prestressed, Precast Concrete Work Specialty Contractor
5). Structural Aluminum or Screen Enclosures Specialty Contractor
6). Tower Specialty Contractor
7). Building Demolition Specialty Contractor
8). Plaster and Lath Specialty Contractor
9). Gypsum Drywall Contractor
10). Glass and Glazing Contractor
11). Window and Door Installation Specialty Contractor
12). Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor
13). Irrigation Specialty Contractor
14). Marine Specialty Contractor
15). Marine Seawall Work Specialty Contractor
16). Marine Bulkhead Work Specialty Contractor
17). Marine Dock Work Specialty Contractor
18). Marine Pile Driving Specialty Contractor
19). Rooftop Solar Heating Installation Specialty Contractor
20). Residential Swimming Pool/Spa Servicing Specialty Contractor
21). Industrial Facility Specialty Contractor
22). Gas Line Specialty Contractor
(3) Nothing in this rule shall be deemed to restrict or limit in any manner the scope of work authorized by law of other contractor classifications.
(4) Certified specialty contractors must maintain applicable worker’s compensation and general liability insurance as required by state and federal laws, including but not limited to the provisions of the Longshoremen’s and Harbor Worker’s Compensation (Marine Contractors) Act, 33 U.S.C.A. §901 et seq. and Title 46 U.S.C.A. for marine specialty contractors.
2024 ADDED 13 NEW CERTIFIED SPECIALTY LICENSE TYPES
Pursuant to House Bill 1383 (2023), as extended by Senate Bill 1142 (2024), which was signed by Governor DeSantis on May 29, 2024. The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) has created new certified specialty license types for the following 13 categories:
Structural Carpentry Specialty Contractor
Structural Masonry Specialty Contractor
Structural Steel Work Specialty Contractor
Structural Prestressed, Precast Concrete Work Specialty Contractor
Structural Aluminum or Screen Enclosures Specialty Contractor
Plaster and Lath Specialty Contractor
Window and Door Installation Specialty Contractor
Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor
Marine Seawall Work Specialty Contractor
Marine Bulkhead Work Specialty Contractor
Marine Dock Work Specialty Contractor
Marine Pile Driving Specialty Contractor
Rooftop Solar Heating Installation Specialty Contractor
Examination Exemption for Specialty Licenses
Effective June 20, 2024, state licensure in the above categories is available for applicants who meet the examination exemption requirements listed below. NOTE: This exam exemption is also available for CILB’s existing specialty license types.
As of June 30, 2021, held a valid local competency card ('Registered' Contractor) in the license category sought;
Has not had said local competency card disciplined in the last five (5) years, and said local competency card is not currently pending any discipline; and
Has, for the requested license type, passed a written examination that the board finds to be substantially similar to the examination required to be licensed as a certified specialty contractor.
